High Heart Reiki
Perinatal Reiki
Pregnancy has always held a particular fascination for me. There's something about that season - the way a body reorganizes itself entirely, the way a whole new human is created, the way joy and vulnerability sit right next to each that - that I've been drawn to for as long as I can remember. It's become one of my favorite areas to focus my Reiki practice on.
That interest doesn't stop with birth, either. Postpartum comes with its own joys and challenges: recovery, exhaustion, immeasurable love, a completely new identity, and having to care for a tiny human around the clock. I think that season deserves just as much support as pregnancy does!
Reiki won't replace anything your prenatal or postpartum care team is already doing. But it can offer something else: a chance for your nervous system to settle and shift out of stress mode and into the state where your body does its own healing best.
Why Reiki is considered safe during pregnancy:
Reiki is gentle by nature. There's no deep tissue work, no physical manipulation, and no pressure placed on the abdomen, so there's no risk of uterine stimulation or physical strain. My hands rest lightly or hover just above the body, following the same non-invasive approach I use in every session.
I also adapt the position of each session to what's comfortable for you. Lying flat isn't recommended in later pregnancy, so I'm happy to have you lie on your side or get propped up on a wedge pillow instead - whatever your body needs that day.
As always, I'd ask that you let your healthcare provider know you're receiving Reiki, just as you would with any complementary therapy during pregnancy.
What Reiki may offer during pregnancy:
People often come to a session hoping for stress relief, a break from anxiety, or just permission to slow down. Reiki is frequently used for these things - encouraging deep relaxation, supporting better sleep, and offering steady emotional support during a season that asks a lot of you.
Reiki has the potential to:
-
Reduce stress and anxiety
-
Reduce pain and discomfort
-
Improve focus
-
Promote bonding and connection with baby
-
Encourage rest, sleep, and relaxation
-
Relieve emotional stress and trauma
-
Promote intuition and self-awareness
What the research shows
There's more research on Reiki and pregnancy than most people expect, and I'd rather be honest about what it shows than oversell it.
A 2024 study followed 68 women in their third trimester, comparing a group that received Reiki to a control group over several sessions. It found a signal toward improved breastfeeding confidence in the Reiki group, though pregnancy-related complaints and quality-of-life scores didn't differ significantly between groups. No adverse effects were reported in either group.
A 2025 study in the Journal of Holistic Nursing looked specifically at women with high-risk pregnancies. Compared to a group that received no additional intervention, the Reiki group showed meaningful improvements in overall well-being and in postpartum physical symptoms like pain and fatigue. There was no measurable difference in maternal attachment between groups.
Neither study says Reiki treats or prevents pregnancy complications, and I won't say that either. What this research does suggest is that Reiki is safe during pregnancy and may offer real support for how a person feels, physically and emotionally, during one of the most demanding seasons of their life.
